Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpeckers are about the size of a Crow and chop huge holes in trees while eating ants and grubs. They are noisy and have a very distinctive flight pattern. Very interesting and striking-looking birds. We have many in the woods at our farm. They stay year-round and enjoy suet in the winter.
Carved American Cherry with pyrography and oil tint. This scrap of wood had an existing knot that gave me the idea for the design. The carving is mounted on a piece of salvaged, charred red cedar.
